Ethan Nwaneri relishing England senior opportunity
Arsenal youngster describes England camp as one of his best experiences
Ethan Nwaneri has described his first experience training with England’s senior squad as one of the best moments of his young career, as the Arsenal midfielder continues to learn from some of the world's top players ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
The teenager has spent the week with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in the United States, gaining valuable insight into the senior international environment as preparations for the tournament continue. For Nwaneri, the opportunity came as a complete surprise.
“It was unexpected, to be fair,” he said. “I was just chilling and then got a call. I didn’t expect I was going to come out here for this opportunity.”
Despite being one of the youngest players involved, Nwaneri has settled quickly into the squad and embraced the chance to train alongside established internationals. He believes the experience has already had a significant impact on his development.
“It’s probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” he explained. “Training with top players, being around this environment and seeing what’s coming up has made it a great week.”

The midfielder acknowledged the step up in intensity compared to youth international football, noting the high standards and pressure that come with representing England at senior level.
“It’s a very high level,” he said. “You’ve got good players everywhere, a fast tempo, and you can feel the pressure of playing for England and preparing for a World Cup.”
Being around the senior squad has strengthened his ambition to one day represent England at a major tournament. The midfielder highlighted the winning mentality within the camp, and the standards demanded every day.
“Everyone just wants to win,” he said. “Everyone is focused, so it’s a great environment to be around.”

Nwaneri also revealed that training with some of the world’s best players has boosted his confidence.
“Of course, it gives me confidence that people appreciate my talent and what I can do,” he said. “It’s great to be here and train with some of the best players in the world.”
Reflecting on his journey, Nwaneri recalled watching England’s World Cup penalty-shootout victory over Colombia in 2018 and growing up admiring players such as Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere. Now, having progressed through England’s youth system, he sees a clear pathway to the senior team.
“You’ve just got to keep doing what you’re doing at your club and with the under-21s, and hopefully you’ll make this England team,” he said.
For now, Nwaneri remains focused on learning from the experience and continuing his impressive development as his career gathers momentum.
