England defender says the squad are determined to build on their opening World Cup victory as they prepare for next challenge

Dan Burn has revealed that the squad's celebrations with the England supporters after their FIFA World Cup 2026 victory over Croatia created a memory he will never forget.

The Newcastle United defender is part of the England squad in North America, his first taste of a senior international tournament at the age of 34, and admits he's cherishing every minute of his World Cup experience.

Following the final whistle in Dallas after their 4-2 victory over Group L rivals Croatia, the players joined fans in singing Oasis' classic 'Wonderwall' inside the stadium, a moment Burn described as one of the highlights of his career.

"I just couldn't stop smiling," he said. "That was such a special moment for me, knowing all my family were there watching and experiencing it at the same time as me.

"Playing in that stadium was incredible and to celebrate with the supporters afterwards made it even more special.

"I've got a lot of experience as a player, but none in tournaments like this. "I'm just trying to enjoy every moment, work hard and be ready whenever the team needs me."

While pleased with the result, Burn acknowledged there are areas England can improve on as they prepare for their next fixture with Ghana on Tuesday 23 June (9pm BST).

"We don't want to concede goals and there are things we can work on," he added. "But throughout qualifying, we've been strong defensively and we're confident we can put those things right."

Burn also praised the impact of head coach Thomas Tuchel, highlighting the leadership qualities that have helped shape the squad since his arrival when he handed the former Fulham, Wigan and Brighton player his first international call-up in March 2025.

"He's got this thing where he can really hold a room when he speaks," Burn said. "Everyone listens. He demands high standards, but he also knows how to get the best out of people.

"The reaction we showed after half-time against Croatia says a lot about his leadership and the belief he gives the players."

Burn also reserved special praise for Jude Bellingham, after the midfielder's impressive opening performance.

"You can really feel when Jude's on it," Burn explained. "He sets the tone for the team. If he flies into a tackle early on, it lifts everybody and raises the level around him."

Away from the pitch, Burn believes the strong bond within the squad could prove crucial as England look to progress deep into the tournament

"We've spent a lot of time together away from football and that's important," he said. "Those are the moments where you really get to know people and build relationships.

"Everyone understands their role and we're all pushing in the same direction."

England look to continue their perfect start with a win against Ghana on Tuesday (9pm BST) could mean a round of 32 qualification for Tuchel's side.
