Report: England WU19s 1-5 Denmark
Young Lionesses suffer defeat in opening game of UEFA Women’s U19 European qualifying
Playing at the Mladost Kakanj Stadium in Bosnia & Herzegovina, head coach John Salomon saw his side reduced to 10 players after just nine minutes when goalkeeper Sophie Jackson was given a straight red card for a foul outside the area.
Denmark didn’t take long to make the most of their numerical advantage, taking the lead after 15 minutes through forward Nikoline Nielsen’s low finish.
The Young Lionesses battled back, though, and were level just five minutes later thanks to Lois Shooter, who converted from the penalty spot after a handball inside the box.
England continued to fight but fell behind for a second time on 30 minutes, with midfielder Mila Bischoff finishing coolly into the bottom corner after bursting through on goal.
Salomon’s side kept the deficit to one heading into half-time, but three substitutions at the break helped give Denmark fresh impetus in the second period.
Frederikke Ludvigsen scored from close-range after good work down the right to make it 3-1 in the 62nd minute, before Andrea Thierry’s volley from a corner extended Denmark’s lead further.
Bischoff grabbed her second goal of the game in the 75th minute, cutting inside and finishing well to seal a 5-1 victory.
The Young Lionesses will now play Switzerland on Saturday 10 October (12pm BST) before wrapping up group A5 against hosts Bosnia & Herzegovina on Tuesday 13 October (12pm BST).
The top three sides will progress to the second round of qualifying in April next year, where the group winners will secure their place at the U19 EURO finals in Hungary in June.
