Tuchel on returning and familiar faces

Three Lions head coach Thomas Tuchel gave his first interview on his squad – now available to watch on the official England app – named earlier today for the first fixtures of 2026-27 which see England kick off their UEFA Nations League 2026-27 campaign.

The England boss spoke on returning faces, a new competition, recreating the connection and much more.

One of those returning faces is Trent Alexander-Arnold who comes back into the squad for the first time since June last year.

“It’s an opportunity for Trent,” explained Tuchel. “He had a good start to the season. He started some matches for Real Madrid and good results. We’re happy to have him back.”

Tuchel will have the chance to work with Jarrad Branthwaite for the first time, having included the Everton defender, who has one cap, in his squad.

“We have Jarrad for a long time on our radar and in our notes,” said Tuchel. “It’s big potential.

“He’s fast, tall, good in build-up, has a strong left foot. It seems like he has a good package to offer. The coach speaks very highly of him.”

Both Alex Scott and Rio Ngumoha – who were part of Tuchel’s World Cup preparation camp in the summer – make the list.

“Alex Scott has maybe one of the best performances in midfield in the Premier League since the start with Bournemouth and individually, he’s one of the outstanding midfielders, so he clearly deserves to be with us,” continued Tuchel.

“Rio was very impressive at this kind of age. We are really excited about his potential and about his natural courage and adventurous style of play.”

And the likes of Cole Palmer and Myles Lewis-Skelly also come back into the fold for the extended four-fixture camp.

“Cole starts every game for Chelsea – he’s a regular starter, he decides matches, he has his numbers back in his game,” said Tuchel.

“Myles ended the season on a very high level with Arsenal, started the Champions League final for them in midfield and is at the moment defending his place in a highly competitive environment.”
