ALEX SCOTT'S GRASSROOTS STORY

New England call-up Alex Scott was caught off guard when Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel picked up the phone to the Bournemouth midfielder.

The 22 year old had just finished his evening meal when he received a message from Tuchel himself who delivered the news that he had been included in the latest senior line-up.

“It’s the proudest day of my life to be called up for the senior team,” said Scott. “It’s something I probably wasn’t expecting to come this soon but I’m grateful for the opportunity. I’m obviously over the moon.

“I was just at home – I’d just finished my dinner – then you get a text saying, ‘are you free for a call?’ I settled myself down, chilled out a little bit then text back saying, ‘yeah, I’m available now’.

“You get the call and you almost can’t believe it – you’re smiling from ear to ear. You then go and text and call your family, tell your family and your friends and they’re happy and crying on the phone. It’s an emotional one and an emotional feeling.”

It wasn’t just his family that were overjoyed for him, either. Scott was met by a rapturous round of applause from his club teammates – whom he thanked for their support – during a gym session on the south coast.

“I went in, in the morning, and I told a few of the lads, so a few lads knew and it went around a little bit, then I was in the treatment room and I could see the media team with cameras in the gym and they’re never in there, so I just knew they would make me do a speech!” he laughed.

“It was nice for the lads to react in that way. We’re such a tight group – we’re so close on the pitch and off the pitch as well.

“It meant the world that they were that happy and you can see their faces in the video and how proud they are. They’re so good to me and I’m grateful that I’ve got them as my team.

And he was also contacted by his step-sister – none other than Lioness Maya Le Tissier – upon the news.

“She text me straight away congratulating me,” recalled Scott. “She said, ‘finally’, because she’s been here for a few years now and she said, ‘just go there, enjoy it and do what you normally do and play with the freedom that I know that you have’.

“It’s nice to have her and hopefully follow in her footsteps. She’s been smashing it for Man United in the WSL and obviously for the Lionesses as well.

“I follow the Lionesses when I can, watch their games and see how Maya is getting on. She obviously does the same for me whenever I’m playing. We were away at the EUROs [during UEFA Women’s EURO 2025] but I was texting her every day and wishing her the best of luck.

“We were very close growing up. We would fly over to Southampton most weekends together. We played in the same local team back home as well.

“She was always playing in the boys’ teams and she was always the best player! We spent every weekend together, so we became very close. It’s just amazing what she’s gone on to do.”

It’s been a self-confessed ‘crazy journey’ for the youngster. Having been involved with the England development teams from the under-18s, Scott lifted the 2022 UEFA U19 EURO trophy with the Young Lions out in Slovakia, whilst on the books at Bristol City.

He was crowned a European champion once again in the summer, part of Lee Carsley’s UEFA U21 EURO-winning team with the tournament being held, once again, in Slovakia – something of a happy hunting ground for Scott.

“I feel like it’s definitely helped getting the call-up here,” he continued. “Definitely confidence wise for me, to take what we did in the summer into this season, playing with the confidence and freedom like we did in the EUROs and taking that into the Premier League is what I’ve done.

“I came back to pre-season a lot fitter, having that tournament and started very strongly in the Premier League.

“It's obviously nice to have Elliot [Anderson] here who I was really close with over the summer. I’ve played with him for the whole tournament. Elliot’s the main one. We came last night and we were chatting for hours. It’s good to see him again – I saw him a few weeks ago when we played them. He’s flying.

“I know Adam [Wharton], Jarell [Quansah] from the summer as well and Traff [James Trafford] and Morgs [Morgan Gibbs-White]. It’s nice to have them here to help me settle in.”

And with two more 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers coming up – first up against Serbia at Wembley, with England having already nailed down their place at the tournament – as the Three Lions sign off the calendar year, the approach for Scott is simply: embrace it and enjoy it.

Although he admitted he has one eye on next year’s tournament.

“It's a shame it’s [the World Cup] not in Slovakia because I feel like we’ve got half a chance if it’s there!” he joked.

“I’m so grateful just to be here around so many top players that I grew up watching and idolising. Now I’m sat in the same room as them and training on the same pitch and hopefully playing on the same team as them.

“I’ve got to show what I’m about. It’s a short camp and there’s two games where I’ve got to go out and play my best football.

“It’s a World Cup season which is very important to perform as best you can and hopefully, get the call off the manager and be in his thoughts for the World Cup.”
