Ollie Watkins and Dean Henderson discuss representing England at a major tournament and who inspired them to get there on Episode Four of Lions’ Den.

The latest episode of Lions’ Den connected by EE is available to watch now on the official England App, as Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson join host Andrew Mensah at the Three Lions’ Florida base camp.

The duo spoke about their journey to the top level of international football and who inspired them through the early stages of their careers.

Asked what it meant to be a part of an England men’s squad for this summer’s tournament, Watkins said: “When you get called to play for England, it’s always an honour, but playing in a World Cup is every kid's dream.

“Wearing an England kit when I was young... I think everyone aspires to do when you’re younger and there are only 26 players who can [make the squad], so it’s a hard thing to achieve. I’m buzzing to be here.”

Watkins played a vital role in England’s journey to the UEFA EURO 2024 final, coming off the bench to score a dramatic winner against the Netherlands in the semi-final.

“When you score a goal, it’s an amazing feeling to be in such a precious moment like that," he said.

“The last kick of the game in the 90 minutes, to know that we’re going to win the game off the back of that and you’re responsible for that, it’s an amazing feeling.

“I watch it a lot. If you put it on now, I’ll get goosebumps!”

Watkins revealed that his older brother was his inspiration growing up, and that he used to prefer watching him play than watching football on television.

Henderson agreed that his older sibling also played an important role in his development, but in a much different way, admitting: “My brother was five years older than me, and I used to play with his mates and had to go in goal because I was the youngest.

“They all thought I was mad because I’d let the ball hit me in the face and I’d be flying around and making saves that I shouldn’t really be making against people five years above me, but I was never a goalkeeper.

“I was playing right midfield at Carlisle. I was known for my pace! The goalkeeper got sick one day and I went in goal. I literally couldn’t get out of goal, but I think it just came from playing with lads older than me.”
