Wiegman's side have made an impressive start to their qualifying campaign

MATCH REPORT: ENGLAND 2-0 ICELAND

Sarina Wiegman was pleased to mark her 50th competitive fixture with a victory as the Lionesses continued their FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifying campaign.

England ran out 2-0 winners over Iceland in Nottingham to make it two wins from two after beating Ukraine earlier in the week.

"An important win,” assessed Wiegman. “I think we played well. We know they're very disciplined, very powerful and really dangerous on the counter.

"For the most part, we took that out so they didn't become dangerous. They had that one chance where Hannah Hampton did really well.”

Wiegman’s side sit top of Group A3 with six points on the board and the England boss has been impressed with the start her side have made.

"Overall, we showed some good football,” she continued. “Of course, we want to score more goals but it starts with winning the game, and we created so many chances. If we're so dominant, we'd like to score more goals.”

And having set out the Lionesses’ intentions to qualify for next year’s tournament – which will be staged in Brazil – as quickly as possible, Wiegman couldn’t have hoped for more.

England sign off their first camp of the calendar year with eight goals scored across the two games.

"What you saw on Tuesday against Ukraine, and now Iceland, they're just so disciplined in defence, it's really hard to break through,” she explained.

“If I look at the development of the team, how do we do better in the final third? Even from Tuesday to today, I saw some things we added."

England’s campaign continues next month when the European champions go head-to-head with world champions Spain at Wembley.
