BALLON D'OR NOMINATIONS

There was major success for England teams and players at the 69th Ballon d'Or awards, which took place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on Monday evening, with two awards for Sarina Wiegman and Hannah Hampton alongside further recognition for England men’s and women’s players in various categories.

Lionesses head coach Wiegman was named as the Women's Team Coach of the Year, the first time this award has been received by an England coach, following her latest success in leading England to a successive EURO title in Switzerland earlier this summer.

And shortly after that award was revealed, England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was announced as the winner of the 2025 Yachine Trophy, which recognises the world's best female goalkeepers following her performances for England at UEFA EURO 2025.

The Chelsea ace came out on top, over the likes of Ann-Katrin Berger, Cata Coll, Chiamaka Nnadozie and Daphne van Domeselaar, who completed the top five goalkeepers.

"I'd like to say a massive thanks to France Football for this. I don't think it's an achievement for me, it's an achievement for women's goalkeeping that the award is now taking place," said Hampton.

"I stand on the shoulders of so many great goalkeepers of the past. It's an honour to be a part of an incredible group.

"I'd like to thank my family, my brother who is here tonight, for all the sacrifices you gave growing up and driving me around everywhere so I could fulfil my dream and be here tonight.

"There are so many coaches, but thanks to Sarina and Darren [Ward] for having the faith and belief in me this summer and the success that we had and to the fans, your support does not go un-noticed and it does truly mean a lot.

"The women's game sadly, on Saturday night, lost a trailblazer in Matt Beard and Matt was someone who cared an awful lot for the women's game before no-one else did. He was someone who lit up the room when everyone was in it and it's a message to show that not everyone should have to go through these dark moments alone - sometimes the brightest smiles in the room hide the heaviest pain and he will be greatly missed.

"Finally, grandpa, I love and miss you everyday. I hope I made you proud, and we did it!"

For her England team mate Alessia Russo, there was the accolade of finishing third in the Women's Ballon d'Or, with Spain's Aitana Bonmati named as the winner for 2025, the third successive year she has won the award.

Four more Lionesses were recognised in the 2025 list too, with Chloe Kelly in fifth place, Leah Williamson in seventh place, Lucy Bronze in ninth and Hampton in tenth.

On the men's side, England's Cole Palmer was named eighth on the list for the Men's Ballon d'Or, which was eventually won by France and Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele.

Meanwhile, Lionesses forward Michelle Agyemang was ranked in fourth for the Women's Kopa Trophy – the accolade which recognises the best female player under the age of 21. The award was won by Vicky Lopez, with Linda Caicedo and Wieke Kaptein placing second and third respectively.

In the Men's Kopa Trophy, Three Lions and Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly came in ninth in an award which was won by Spain and Barcelona's Yamal Lamine, who also came runner-up in the main Men's award.
